A reckless father who tore around roads, pavements and footpaths and pulled wheelies while his bewildered three-year-old son sat on the petrol tank was jailed for five years and four months today.

Ryan Ward, sped around at up to 40 mph without driving licence as his son Daley sat in front holding onto the handlebars. Neither was wearing a helmet or protective clothing.

Ward, of Hilldale Avenue, Blackley, was jailed after he admitted dangerous driving, cruelty to a child under 16, driving while disqualified and an unrelated firearms offence.

Judge Martin Rudland, said: ‘I have to deal with you for a rather unusual case of child cruelty, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.’

He added that the offence was captured on camera by a police helicopter, which was on general patrol when it saw Mr Ward riding the bike. It then discovered his three-year=old son was astride the petrol tank.

‘In the end no harm was done and indeed many years ago it wouldn’t have been a criminal offence, but now it constitutes neglect and it’s right it should be, because it is an extremely foolish thing to do with a child so young. You were going at an excessive speed and at one stage quite close to the canal.’

Initially the father and son were spotted waiting at traffic lights in the Harpurhey area of Manchester. The helicopter kept its spy camera trained on Ward as he rode away.

Officers watched as the bike then hurtled past parked cars and through terraced streets.

During the ride Ward repeatedly lifted the front wheel off the ground in wheelie stunts to impress the little boy.

He was eventually arrested after he was spotted pushing the bike along the road on June 5.

Prosecuting, Michael Lavery noted to the court at that at one point Ward looks directly at the helicopter as he becomes aware of it.

Defending Robert Kearney, said: ‘The defendant said when questioned that he wouldn’t let his son eat a boiled sweet for the risk of choking.

‘But he couldn’t see the harm in what he did on the bike doing wheelies without a helmet probably he says because he’s never had any trouble with bikes himself. He accepts his responsibility, he doesn’t think his actions through. After the case at Manchester Crown Court, a neighbour said: ‘None of us could quite believe it when we heard what Ryan did. You would think he would be a bit more responsible when it comes to taking his lad out on a motorbike.

‘But obviously it seems he couldn’t give two hoots for his or his own son’s safety. He must be one of the most feckless fathers in Britain.’

PC Andy Moore of Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Ward was riding without regard for himself but more importantly the public and his young son.

‘He showed a blatant disregard for the rules of the road and has rightly been sentenced for his foolish and reckless actions.’

Neighbourhood Inspector, Ruth Bradley-Holt, said: ‘Off road motorbikes are a real nuisance to the police and local residents.

‘Ward broke the law by riding an off road bike in a public place but to compound matters the manner of his driving was appalling and he put the local community and even his own child at risk.

‘We work very hard to address the concerns of local residents and that includes clamping down hard on those who misuse off road bikes and we seized three vehicles that were being used illegally.

‘We want to send a very clear message that it will not be tolerated and you can expect to find yourself up before the courts. ‘
